The land had a few run-down structures, no real roads, over-silted dams, and no wildlife at all. It was partially farmed and mostly indigenous veld. The distinctive natural vegetation was permitted to recover through an extensive, protracted rehabilitation program carried out under the guidance of experts after all the cattle had been removed. Construction on the infrastructure for a family’s “home away from home”—what we now know as The Lodge—began as a massive dam was being repaired. Game was gradually introduced with care and concern for historically existing species, and today the 36 different animals and 129 identifiable birds stand as a testament to the persistence and long-term thinking required for conservation to have any real meaning.
