The Pets24 Score is our proprietary rating system that evaluates dog food based on six key factors that are vital to canine nutrition and overall value. Each dog food receives a percentage score that reflects its overall quality and suitability.
How We Evaluate Dog Food
Our scoring system analyses the following components:
1. Protein Content (Maximum 3 points)
Protein is essential for your dog’s muscle development and overall health. We award points based on the percentage of protein in the food:
- 1 points: Below optimal protein levels
- 2 points: 22% protein (optimal level)
- 3 points: Above optimal protein levels (extra protein can be beneficial)
2. Locally Made (Maximum 1 points)
We value supporting local products and shorter supply chains:
- 0 points: Imported
- 1 points: Made locally
3. Vet/Expert Recommended (Maximum 1 points)
Foods formulated or endorsed by veterinarians or animal nutrition experts:
- 0 points: No expert or veterinarian recommendation
- 1 points: Recommended by veterinarians or experts in Pet Nutrition
4. Allergen Level (Maximum 5 points)
We evaluate how suitable the food is for dogs with sensitivities:
- 1 points: High allergen potential
- 3 points: Medium allergen potential
- 5 points: Low allergen potential
7. Benefits (Maximum 4 points)
We assess the nutritional benefits beyond basic requirements:
- 1 points: Standard benefits only
- 2 points: Has added vitamins and nutritional add-ins
- 3 points: Contains substantial vitamins, extra nutrients
- 4 points: Specialised benefits (targeted health improvements)
Calculating the Pets24 Score
The individual scores from each category are added together to create an overall score (maximum 14 points), which is then converted to a percentage to create the Pets24 Score.

To illustrate how our system works, consider the following example:
Brand X Dog Food
- Protein Content: 22% = 2 points
- Locally Made: Yes = 1 points
- Expert Recommended: Yes = 1 points
- Allergen Level: Medium = 3 points
