In this interview conducted by Pets24 with Penny van der Merwe from Woofable, we delve into the fascinating world of cannabis and its effects on pets. Penny shares her extensive knowledge on how cannabis interacts with the endocannabinoid system in animals, offering insights into how it can alleviate chronic pain and other ailments. She also discusses specific conditions that respond well to CBD treatment, provides guidance on selecting the right types of CBD products, and offers practical advice for pet owners considering CBD as a treatment option. This interview sheds light on the potential benefits and considerations of incorporating CBD into your pet’s wellness routine.
Can you explain how cannabis works in a pet’s body to alleviate symptoms of chronic pain or other ailments?
Cannabis interacts with your pet’s endocannabinoid system, which regulates various physiological functions such as mood, pain perception, and immunity, promoting overall wellness and balance. The endocannabinoid system is present in nearly all living organisms, from humans to animals, and even some insects. Its primary function is to maintain homeostasis in the body, ensuring balance. Cannabinoids are molecules found both within the body and in various plants, including cannabis. These molecules interact with the endocannabinoid system.
The body naturally produces its own endocannabinoids, which bind to cannabinoid receptors, activating systems within your pet’s body. This is why using a full-spectrum hemp extract, rather than a CBD isolate, is essential. Full-spectrum hemp extracts contain various cannabinoids, including CBD, CBG, and a small amount of THC, which work together to be recognized by the endocannabinoid system, promoting balance and healing.
Exogenous cannabinoids from plants like cannabis closely resemble the body’s natural cannabinoids. Essentially, nature has crafted compounds that mimic the chemicals already present in the body. This similarity allows the compounds found in full-spectrum hemp to initiate appropriate responses, allowing the body to heal itself naturally.
What specific conditions in pets have you found to respond well to CBD treatment?
CBD has shown to be beneficial for various conditions in pets. Studies indicate significant improvements in anxiety, separation anxiety, and behavioural disorders. It’s also effective for arthritis, osteoarthritis, and joint degeneration and inflammation. Research on full-spectrum hemp products shows promising results in helping the body combat cancer. Additionally, CBD aids in managing epilepsy, Cushing’s disease, itchy skin conditions, and seizures. It can also calm pets during car rides, thunderstorms, or fireworks. Overall, CBD improves symptoms in many conditions, even if it doesn’t cure them entirely.
Are there any particular types or strains of CBD that are more effective or safer for pets?
It’s crucial to use CBD derived from naturally grown hemp plants. Unlike marijuana, hemp is consistent in its type, but how it is grown matters greatly. Ideally, the hemp should be organic, free from heavy metals, GMOs, and pesticides, to ensure a healthy plant and, consequently, a healthy extract.
What dosage guidelines do you recommend for pet owners considering CBD for their pets?
In South Africa, the CBD industry is currently unregulated, so working with a veterinarian and a qualified veterinary physiotherapist and qualified canine nutritionist, we have done the research, we’ve tested it out ourselves and we know who the good manufacturers are, and the people who are above board and ethical, because we have that relationship with the manufacturers, where we know how the plants are grown and how it is being produced. Ideally, we are hoping to see very soon that the South African market will start regulating it more by doing the proper testing from the SABS.
Despite common misconceptions, dosing CBD oil for pets has very little to do with size and
weight. Optimal CBD Dosage for dogs, cats, and other pets is most effectively determined with consideration for each animal’s unique physiological condition and health status.
This includes factors such as:
- Their endocannabinoid system
- Age
- Metabolism
- Disease process
- Current health and wellness status
Could you discuss the potential risks or side effects that pet owners should be aware of when using CBD?
Studies show that full-spectrum CBD has minimal side effects. Some dogs might become sleepy or energetic (zoomies) initially, but these effects typically subside within a few days. Overdosing is rare, but if a pet ingests marijuana products or human edibles, veterinary advice should be sought immediately due to potential harmful additives like chocolate. Mild side effects like diarrhoea may occur but are uncommon.
How do you determine whether a pet is a good candidate for CBD treatment?
CBD can benefit pets with conditions such as arthritis, which can be diagnosed by a vet, seizures, or general ill health. It’s essential to consult with a specialist who can assess the pet’s age, physiology, and movement to recommend the right CBD product. In most cases, your best bet for a successful outcome when using a full-spectrum hemp extract is with
consistent administration of their optimal CBD dosage for dogs, cats and pets. For pets with chronic conditions, this is especially true. Much of the effect of CBD is happening below the surface and is not immediately recognizable. You may see immediate results after starting a CBD regimen, but there are long-term benefits that only arise from consistent use.
Conditions where this is the case include (but are not limited to):
- Arthritis
- Cancer and other neoplastic conditions
- Seizures and Epilepsy
- Cushing’s Disease
- Behavioural Needs
Situations where a stand-alone dose, or extra situational dose may be suitable include:
- Thunderstorm/Firework Anxiety
- Bouts of Increased Pain
- Separation Anxiety
- Car Rides
- Grooming
What advice would you give to pet owners who are new to considering CBD as a treatment option for their pets?
Not all CBD products are created equal. Consult with a specialist and choose products that are clearly labelled with their ingredients and source. Dosage varies for each pet, so a trial and error method is often recommended. Start with a low dose and gradually increase it while monitoring your pet’s response. Keeping a daily log of dosages and effects can help determine the optimal amount.
Is there anything else you’d like owners to know about CBD treatment that we just haven’t covered yet?
Over the past four years, I’ve witnessed remarkable transformations in dogs using CBD. When sourced correctly and combined with a balanced, species-appropriate diet, CBD is an incredible natural product.
We’ve seen significant improvements in cancer cases. For example, one of my dogs, who suffers from severe arthritis due to a pelvic injury, is now full of energy and bounces around the garden like a rabbit at 14 years old. My other dog, a Basset Hound who came to me at 11 with cancer, was put on a fresh raw diet and CBD. Within three months, she was cancer-free and still thrives today at 14, acting like a puppy.
From personal experience and working with over 3,500 dogs through our company, I’ve seen tremendous benefits from CBD. While it may not cure everything, it significantly aids the body’s natural healing processes, which is our ultimate goal.
